20 Tech Habits to Improve Your Life from PCWorld

Filed under: Software, Uncategorized — HanaDaddy @ 6:53 pm

I’ve been busy fighting war with the WASP. They made a nest inside of our bathroom wall. I am just worried that everyday one or two wasps passing through the window guard and getting into the bathroom somehow. I will write on that in another blog later.

Anyway, I just stumbled onto this article - 20 Tech Habits to Improve Your Life.

It explains the useful DIYs and software that will help you make your life better. I’ve been learning these things by browsing all the websites and blogs for a long time. But you can get them all in a single webblog! It summarizes them very well with all the popular website URL links. Some of them are

  • Software keyboard launcher (For example, Launchy)
  • Stay on Task With the Right To-Do List (Remember the milk)
  • Use Your Camera Phone as Your Digital Photographic Memory
  • Consolidate Multiple E-Mail Addresses With Gmail : You can also send email from GMAIL with different ‘from’ email address.
  • Never Forget a Password Again:( KeepPass)
  • Encrypt Your Private Files (TrueCrypt - in my USB thumb drive I put the encrypted data file )

Also, I learned a nice tip today from this site that you can get money back from the Amazon.com if the price is lowered within a month after you purchase a product! And there is a nice little web site that automatically watches the price list and alerts you when the price goes down. (NukePrice.com)

List of Free software from Microsoft

Filed under: Software — HanaDaddy @ 10:52 pm

Did you know that Microsoft provides many free software ? Blake Handler has gathered all in his live website. This is so amazing . There must be more than hundreds of free software on that list!

The ones that I am currently using are

  • Alt-Tab Replacement: showing the preview image of each application. It is nicer than the default Alt-Tab, but much lighter then other Alt-Tab applications
  • Clear Type : You have to use this . The screen is a lot clearer and I just can’t live without it.
  • Tweak UI
  • Process Explorer: originally developed by Sysinternals . It is a must utility if you want to know detail information about the processes that are running on your desktop.

There is a free Microsoft word too! Word 5.5 for DOS ! :)

Also there are free development tools available. Of course they are somewhat limited in functionality compared to the commercial version, but they are really great!

  • SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2005 with Advanced Services
  • Visual 2005 Web Developer
  • Visual Basic, C#, C++, & J#

Do you like to get the latest information on the Freewares? There are so many opensource and freewares in the Internet nowadays, and so many freeware introducing blogs to check. So I have gathered popular blog website into a single metablog website. http://blogfeed.neox.net. Now I just don’t visit my blogfeed site and just read the ones I like to read. It also shows the small screen shot of the article or the image contained in the article. Neat.

Ebay lesson that I learned Canon SD850

Filed under: Having Fun — HanaDaddy @ 12:42 am

So my wife broke the old Canon A530 that was with us for about 4 years. Now it was the time for me to get a new digital camera.

Canon A series are affordable and produce high quality images. I loved the old A530, but it has this issue I hated. The flash recharging time is so long ( 5 secs ) that it is annoying when you need to take several shots continuously with the flash on. Another issue is that the size is much bigger (bulkier) than the similar class cameras from other manufacturers.

So I decided to go with the SD series. It is said that SD series cameras are much faster charging flash after each shot which is true. And decided to go with SD850 IS, but didn’t want to spend more than $200. But SD850IS was $229 at Amazon which was one of the lowest prices I could find. So I accidentally started looking for it in the Ebay. You know, I never used Ebay before and it was bit uncomfortable first but after few trades, I decided to search for SD850IS in Ebay.

So I won mine at about $113 + $6 shipping. Total about $120. At that time, I though it was a great deal even if it was a used one.

Enable UnblockA - Internet Speed Enhancement Tool

Filed under: Software — HanaDaddy @ 11:21 pm

Today, I was searching for the Internet Speed Enhancer to increase Internet Speed. And I still remember that I have written about unblocka about a year ago. It was good enough for me at that time so I tried to use it again during the desktop cleaning in the afternoon.

Well I noticed their http://www.unblocka.com website is down. So I searched Google and downloaded it from the Internet. But then this dialog shows up saying that ‘UnBlocka has timed out download a new version from www.unblocka.com Tuning has been disabled’.

Then on the main window, the ‘Tune System’ button was disabled and I was not able to modify system! I really felt bad, sorry for the perfectly good software going down into the trash can. I don’t understand why the developer had to make the button disabled when his site is down. He shouldn’t have done that.

Any way, I decided to stick with unblocka instead of searching Internet for another similar software by using AutoHotKey. I just came up with a AutoHotKey executable that will enable the ‘Tune System’ Button. Just copy my ‘enable_unblocka.exe’ into the same folder where ‘unblocka.exe’ is. Then just run it.

See my script in action below.

Enjoy!

Download enable_unblocka.exe
